Hispanotech.ca is pleased to lead the 2018 Mentorship Program, a 12-week mentoring program now in its fifth session. With the objective of helping Canadian-Hispanics accelerate their integration within the professional Canadian labour market, this program has impacted the lives of hundreds of Hispanics since 2015.

This year’s program is organized in partnership with CCPA (Canadian Colombian Professional Association), Javerianos in Canada, ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association), and PwC’s “Latin Connection” employee resource group. “Joining forces with other professional associations has allowed us to grow the program and serve participants in several areas beyond IT, including Finance, Marketing, Legal, Engineering, and others”, said Carlos Paz-Soldan, President of Hispanotech, adding, “Networking is a critical activity for immigrants, and we provide a vehicle to do it in a friendly, familiar environment”.

Gabriel Sorozobal, Hispanotech’s Director and Lead of the Mentorship Committee, shared that 224 applications to participate were received, consisting of 102 Mentors and 122 Mentees, more than double the numbers of 2017. These figures have skyrocketed in four years since the beginning of the program in 2015, were 9 Mentor-Mentee pairs were arranged and now in 2018, there are 99 pairs. This growth rate is a proof of the success of the mentorship, with more than 50 mentees obtaining employment in their field, either during the length of the program or in the following three months.

“Besides growing, we have also enhanced the support for the mentees and mentors by adding an English Proficiency Test and a Resume Review Workshop, both contributed by corporate sponsors, as well as an Entrepreneurship Track, for Mentees that are planning or in the process of launching a business”, said Galo Ginocchio, Director of Hispanotech. “To accommodate growth, we have also added cloud-based tools for tracking of Mentor-Mentee interactions and progress, trouble escalation to Super Mentors, and an online Dashboard that lets participants compare their progress to the cohort. It also makes it easier for our Mentorship Operations staff to manage the program and communicate with participants”, he added.

The kick-off, a standing room only event, took place on August 23rd in the Toronto office of PwC, also a corporate sponsor, and counted with the presence of the consuls of Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. Univision TV provided a camera crew to cover the event and conduct interviews.

On September 20th, in the second meeting of the program, the status of the group’s overall mentor-mentee process development was discussed. The objective of the meeting was to provide support and guidance on how to work better together to overcome challenges and reach objectives.

The graduation ceremony for the 2018 Mentorship Program will take place on November 21st , 2018

    What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a relationship between one person (the Mentor) with certain knowledge, skills and connections, and another person (the Mentee) who wants to acquire more knowledge, skills, and connections for his or her own personal and professional growth.

What is the Joint Mentorship Program 2018?

The objective of the Mentoring Program is to help internationally trained professionals make the transition to work in Canada, improve their skills and confidence while developing professional connections.

The Mentoring Program for 2018 is being jointly organized by Hispanotech, the Canadian Colombian Professional Association, Javerianos en Canada, and ISACA Toronto Chapter.

The program matches immigrant professionals (Mentees) with seasoned professionals (Mentors) already established in Canada who share similar professional backgrounds and career interests.

Over a three-month period, each Mentor-Mentee pair works together defining a realistic set of goals and executing an action plan to achieve these goals.

    How does it work?

Participants commit to meet once per week for three months. The program will try to match Mentors with a Mentee with similar backgrounds and interests.

The program will monitor and support the mentorship relationship through ongoing advice, group meetings, networking, and problem‐solving exercises.

    Mentorship Program Requirements

    • Mentors need to have a minimun of 3 years of direct experience in the Canadian labour market in their industry of professional practice
    • Mentors and Mentees must be registered members of one or more of the partner organizations (Hispanotech, CCPA, Javerianos en Canada, or ISACA)
    • Participants must complete a minimum of 12 hours of face-to-face, phone or online meetings in the season period
    • They must record each meeting in a log file
    • Participate at least in 2 of the 3 group meetings
    • Must be eligible to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or holder of a Temporary Work Permit)
    • Participants that complete all the requirements will receive a certificate of participation in the program
    • Upon request, a letter certifying the total volunteer hours will be issued to Mentors so they can claim their Professional Development Units (PDUs)

    The Track Record

50+ mentees who graduated from the program have obtained employment in their field, either during the length of the program or in the following 3 months.

    The Keys to Success

    • Fast paced Mentorship program with only 3 months in length “12 weeks to make a difference in someone’s life”
    • 3 group meetings to enhance group support and networking
    • Close measure and monitoring of progress
    • Learn from success stories as well as from peers challenges to move forward
    • Support from a dedicated team of Volunteers and Supermentors

Please note that, although the program has no cost, we may need to charge a small amount ($20-$30) to attend the Graduation ceremony in case we don’t have a sponsor to cover the catering and beverages.

    Consent for Use of Media

Registration and attendance at, or participation in the Mentorship Program 2018, constitutes an agreement by the registrant to permit the organizer’s use and distribution (both now and in the future) of the registrant’s image or voice in photographs, videos, and other electronic reproductions of such events.
